Lifting Equipment Inspections

The main legislation concerning lifting equipment is The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER), this covers all work equipment that lifts and lowers a load.

LOLER Inspection

Regulation 9 of LOLER requires a competent person to carry out a thorough Lifting Equipment examination.

Lifting equipment means work equipment for lifting or lowering loads and includes its attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it.

A thorough examination is a systematic and detailed examination of the lifting equipment to detect any defects that are, or might become dangerous.

Typical inspection frequencies:

  • Lifting equipment that lifts persons – 6 monthly
  • Lifting accessories including shackles, hooks, chains – 6 monthly
  • All other lifting equipment – 12 monthly
