When A LOLER Thorough Examination Becomes Urgent In Tamworth

Tamworth’s logistics and distribution sector runs lifting equipment hard. On the M42 corridor — at Birch Coppice, Core 42, Tame Valley, and the Lichfield Road estates — forklifts, pallet handling equipment, and loading bay hoists are in near-constant use. Examination intervals come round quickly, and with multiple assets across a site, it’s not unusual for one or two to slip past their due date without anyone noticing until a check flags the gap.

The regulation is clear: lifting equipment that falls outside its statutory examination interval must not be used. For equipment lifting people, the interval is six months. For other lifting equipment, twelve months — unless an examination scheme under Regulation 9 sets a different frequency.

If your certificates are coming due, or already past, complete the contact form with your equipment list and site location. We’ll aim to have a quote back to you within 48 hours. Overdue jobs are typically given priority scheduling — mention it in the form.

Lifting Equipment We Examine Across Tamworth

Tamworth’s industrial profile is predominantly logistics, distribution, engineering, and construction — all sectors with significant lifting equipment obligations under LOLER. The equipment we examine for Tamworth duty holders includes:

  • Logistics and distribution parks (Birch Coppice, Core 42, Tamworth Logistics Park): forklift trucks, reach trucks, counterbalance trucks, tail lifts, dock levellers, scissor lift tables, overhead cranes, and lifting accessories including slings, chains, shackles, and eyebolts.
  • Engineering and manufacturing (Tame Valley Industrial Estate, Lichfield Road Industrial Estate): overhead and gantry cranes, jib cranes, runway beams, hydraulic press lifting components, and manipulators.
  • Vehicle servicing and fleet maintenance (B77–B79 postcode area): two-post and four-post vehicle inspection lifts, scissor ramps, and mobile column lifts. Vehicle inspection lifts fall under LOLER where persons work beneath them — six-monthly examination, not annual.
  • Construction and plant: MEWPs, cherry pickers, boom lifts, telehandlers, and excavators with lifting attachments.
  • Care, health, and supported living: patient hoists, ceiling-track hoisting systems, and mobile hoists.
  • Commercial and public buildings: passenger lifts, goods lifts, and building maintenance units.

LOLER applies wherever lifting equipment is used at work, regardless of sector. If you are unsure whether a specific item falls under the regulation, include it in your enquiry and we will confirm.

What Happens When Our Engineer Arrives On Site

Most operations managers want to know what to expect on the day — not just what the law says. Here is how a typical visit runs.

1

On site.

The engineer carries out the thorough examination under LOLER Schedule 1: visual examination and functional checks, measurements of wear, and where required, load testing or non-destructive testing. Methodology depends on the equipment type and the competent person’s judgement in line with industry standard procedures.

2

Defects.

If a defect is found that is, or could become, a danger to persons, we report it verbally before leaving site — then in writing in the formal report. Immediate withdrawal from service is required where the defect presents a current risk. You’ll know on the day.

3

Reporting.

You receive a Report of Thorough Examination for each item examined, containing the eleven prescribed elements of LOLER Schedule 1 — including the date of examination, condition found, any defects, and the next due date.

4

Records.

Reports are delivered electronically.

For facilities and compliance managers running LOLER alongside pressure system inspections in Tamworth and other statutory regimes, the administrative side matters as much as the engineering. The report arrives reliably, referenced correctly, and usable directly for insurer and auditor requirements.

Who Enforces LOLER In Tamworth, And What That Means For Your Reporting

Most Tamworth operators know they need a LOLER thorough examination. Fewer know which authority enforces the regulation at their specific site — and that distinction matters, because defect reports with serious findings must go to the relevant enforcing authority.

Enforcement in Tamworth is split between two bodies depending on workplace type.

HSE covers industrial workplaces — warehouses, factories, logistics facilities, construction sites, engineering premises. For most occupiers on Tamworth’s industrial estates (Birch Coppice, Core 42, Tame Valley, Lichfield Road Industrial Estate), HSE is the relevant authority: Hornbeam House, Electra Way, Crewe CW1 6GJ, Tel: 0300 003 1747.

Tamworth Borough Council enforces in non-industrial workplaces — retail premises, offices, and leisure facilities: Marmion House, Lichfield Street, Tamworth B79 7BZ, Tel: 01827 709 709.

Where a Report of Thorough Examination identifies a serious defect that presents an existing danger, the competent person is required under Schedule 1 to notify the relevant enforcing authority. Knowing which one applies to your site is worth confirming in advance.

Direct Contact, No Broker, Fast Scheduling

GSB Inspections provides statutory examinations under LOLER, PUWER, and related regulations. We do not sell maintenance contracts, replacement parts, or repair services.

A thorough examination under Regulation 9 is designed to be carried out by someone sufficiently independent to make objective findings. When an inspection company also sells maintenance, the objectivity question is a reasonable one. When the inspection company’s only commercial interest is the examination itself, that question doesn’t arise.

Enquiries go directly to senior staff — no broker, no call centre, no being passed between departments. We have a dedicated forklift inspection page for Tamworth if you need LOLER examinations specifically on your fork truck fleet.

Got Questions? (FAQs)

The equipment should not be used until a current Report of Thorough Examination is in place. Using lifting equipment outside its statutory examination interval is a breach of LOLER, regardless of whether a failure has actually occurred. Complete the enquiry form today with your equipment list and location. Overdue jobs are typically given priority scheduling — mention it in the form and we will factor it in.

Yes. Forklift trucks are lifting equipment under LOLER and require a thorough examination at least every twelve months. If your forklifts are used to lift people at any point, the interval drops to six months. If you operate a fleet, all units need to be on the examination schedule. We have a dedicated forklift inspection page for Tamworth with more detail.

In everyday use, the same thing. “Thorough examination” is the formal regulatory term under Regulation 9 of LOLER 1998. “LOLER inspection” is how most operators search for and refer to it. The statutory output is a Report of Thorough Examination meeting the requirements of Schedule 1 — that is what insurers and auditors require.

Send your equipment list and site location to info@gsbinspections.co.uk or complete the enquiry form on this page. We aim to come back with a quote within 48 hours. If your list is incomplete, send what you have — we can confirm details when we schedule the visit.

It depends on your workplace type. HSE covers industrial premises — warehouses, factories, logistics facilities, and engineering units. Tamworth Borough Council’s environmental health team covers non-industrial workplaces including retail, offices, and leisure facilities. For most occupiers on Tamworth’s industrial estates (Birch Coppice, Tame Valley, Lichfield Road), HSE is the correct authority.

Ideally your most recent Report of Thorough Examination for each item, your equipment register, and last examination dates. If records are incomplete or held by the previous provider, we can work from a physical asset list on the first visit — most switching jobs start that way. Mention in your enquiry that you are switching and we will factor the handover into the visit plan.
