What happens when our engineer arrives on site
Before the examination starts, the engineer will confirm the register against what is physically on site — a step that catches gaps and additions that have not made it onto the paperwork.

On site.
The engineer carries out the thorough examination in line with LOLER Schedule 1: systematic visual examination and functional checks, measurements of wear, and where required, non-destructive or load testing. Methodology depends on the equipment type — a forklift examination differs from an overhead travelling crane, which differs again from a ceiling track hoist or a set of lifting slings. The competent person applies industry standard procedures for each type.

Defects.
If a defect is identified that is, or could become, a danger to people, it is reported verbally before the engineer leaves site and confirmed in the written report. Where a defect requires immediate withdrawal from service, you will know on the day. The verbal and written reporting requirement is statutory under Schedule 1 of LOLER — not a discretionary courtesy.

Reporting.
You receive a Report of Thorough Examination for each item examined, containing the eleven particulars required by LOLER Schedule 1 — equipment identification, date and place of examination, defects found, recommended actions, and the next examination due date.
